A Letter from the CEO of ChristLit Award
Deb Richmond’s The Wandering Place is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read, and I enjoyed every single moment of it. Richmond has pulled off an extraordinary feat, crafting a multifaceted, page-turning mystery without ever losing the deep empathy required for a story centered on caring for aging parents. Her writing style is exceptionally vivid; she brings the characters to life so masterfully that you can instantly sense how they dress, move, and speak, making the entire narrative incredibly engrossing. At the heart of the book is Kaye, whose honest, unfiltered inner thoughts had me laughing out loud, providing a wonderfully authentic anchor for the reader.
What makes this novel truly unforgettable is its stunningly accurate and validating portrayal of the exhausting reality of loving someone through dementia. Richmond handles the messy, imperfect nature of caregiving with a rare grace that is a gift to readers everywhere. Using the shifting, elusive memories of dementia to unravel a long-buried family secret is absolute genius. The unfolding mystery becomes much more than a simple quest to find out what happened in the past; it is an emotional journey to discover truth within a fading mind, ultimately proving that the greatest discovery of all is the enduring power and strength of family love.
Adding another layer of brilliance is the clever meta-narrative structure, where the main character writes the exact manuscript we are reading in real-time as the story unfolds. This setup even playfully pauses to note that it is depicting the misadventures of older adults and the struggles of aging, posing the witty question, “If it's no fun to live, how much fun can it be to read?” I can confidently confirm that The Wandering Place is absolutely brilliant to read. It balances heavy, poignant realities with sparkling wit and suspense, creating a masterpiece that will stay with you long after the final page is turned.
